Luanda - Foreign minister Téte António on Thursday, in Luanda, expressed Angola´s interest in continuing to support the Gulf of Guinea Commission (GGC), with a view to revitalising the organisation.
According to the official who was speaking by videoconference in the fifth Conference of Heads of State and Government of the GGC, the Angolan Executive has always given great importance to the sub-region, given its geostrategic location.
While speaking on behalf of President João Lourenço, the Foreign minister said that at this time the GGC needs a new dynamic having into account current and future challenges.
Fifth Conference
At the end of the conference, the Angolan minister said that it had been decided to revise the GGC treaty and create a management team to be able to accompany the necessary revitalisation, as well as a better communication policy.
He pointed out also the idea of the GGC opening itself to external partners based on partnerships of interest of the member states as one of the decisions taken at the meeting.
The head of Angolan diplomacy revealed that Nigeria, through President Muhammadu Buhari, ended his term of Office as the organisation’s chairman, passing the position to the Head of State of Ghana, Nana Akufo-Addo.
He explained that the members of the Executive Commission have left, while Equatorial Guinea will present a new Executive Secretary, Nigeria will present the Deputy Executive Secretary for political issues and Angola should provide the Deputy Secretary General for Natural Resources.
Téte António added that Angola continues to be the vice-chair, as well as holds the organisation´s headquarters.
He stressed that another challenge is about the monetary contribution of the member states, emphasizing that Angola, along with Nigeria and Ghana, has been an example in this segment.
Angola is a founding member of the GGC, which was created in 2001. Itt includes Cameroon, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Republic of the Congo, Gabon, Equatorial Guinea, Nigeria, Ghana and Sao Tome and Principe.
