Abu Dhabi - Angolan Head of State João Lourenço said Tuesday that the country pledges itself to use 77 percent of renewable energies by 2025.

João Lourenço made the pledge at the panel on Clean Energy in Africa, as part of Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week 2023.

Angola currently produces 76% of its energy from environmentally friendly sources, with Africa being the least polluting continent, emitting 25% of greenhouse gas.

In his speech, the Angolan Statesman said that the country has outlined complementary actions in the field of sustainable management.

"We are building a large hydroelectric dam that will add 2.3 gigawatts of hydroelectric energy", he said, adding that in the medium term the goal is to produce another 1.2 gigawatts of energy from solar parks.

Addressing an audience, João Lourenço reiterated Angola's determination to remain committed to climate action and to the adoption of a low-carbon development model.

He announced, on the occasion, that Angola is taking the first steps to produce green hydrogen and that the country is open to the production of wind energy.

On the other hand, he said that, alongside production, Angola is committed to building new energy transmission lines to different corners of the country.

President João Lourenço made it clear that one of Africa's objectives is to achieve industrialisation in the coming decades.

He warned, however, that despite this objective, the continent should not go through what happened to other parts of the world where the industrialisation process caused considerable environmental damage.

As for the holding of the United Nations Conference on Climate Change (COP28), which the United Arab Emirates will host in November, President João Lourenço said he faces the event with great hope.

During the panel discussion on Clean Energy in Africa, the Angolan Head of State encouraged the transition to clean energy.

In addition to João Lourenço,  the Zambian counterpart Hakainde Hichilema also addressed the panel.
