Addis Ababa - Angola will have the responsibility of taking forward the 2063 agenda of the African Union (AU) and adapting to other endogenous dynamics of the continent, starting next Saturday, when it takes over the rotating presidency of the organisation.

The Angolan Head of State, João Lourenço, will lead the continental organization until February 2026, focusing on issues such as peace and security, economic development, unemployment, food security, climate change, among other challenges, namely how to represent the African continent in the world.

According to Foreign minister, Téte António, Angola will also have responsibilities towards the continent's partners in the world, including strategic partnerships with various countries and international organisations.

Téte António who was speaking at the end of the meeting of the Executive Council of the African Union, held on Wednesday and Thursday, said that the meeting prepared the Summit of Heads of State and Government to facilitate the work of the event, which will renew the AU Commission.

“Today, the first task, after analysing the report presented by the ambassadors‘ committee, was to elect the commissioners and members of other important bodies”, he stressed.

The meeting also assessed the strategic reports of some bodies, including the Committee of Finance Ministers, which is led by Angola and chaired by the Angolan Finance minister, Vera Daves.

The secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, Esmeralda Mendonça, presented the report, which was unanimously approved, according to Téte António.

He added that the country also presented a report on the holding of the Luanda Biennial, scheduled for this year, as part of the promotion of a culture of peace on the continent.

Still on the electoral process, he said that of great interest to Angola was the election of jurist Graciano Domingos to the African Union's Advisory Committee on Corruption, having received 48 votes.

He stressed that the chairman and vice-chairman of the AU Commission will be elected at a session to be chaired by João Lourenço, already in his capacity as leader of the continental organisation.

The Angolan Foreign minister highlighted that the chairman and the vice-chairwoman of the African Union Commission will be elected at a session that will be led by João Lourenço, already as the leader of the continental organisation.

Djibouti, Kenya and Madagascar are competing for the presidency of the commission, replacing Chad, which has led the organisation for seven years, chaired by Moussa Faki.

However, the vice-chair will be elected from Algeria, Morocco or Egypt.

Afterwards, he emphasised, the Heads of State will meet behind closed doors, during which President João Lourenço will present his reports as a defender of peace and reconciliation in Africa, as well as a mediator in the conflict between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
