Luanda - The financial contribution at the value of US$100k and Angola's intervention during the general debate at the 75th session of the UNHCR Executive Committee was praised, on Wednesday, by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), Filippo Grandi.
The Italian diplomat serving the United Nations praised the decisive role played by Angola in supporting projects for refugees and stateless people around the world.
“Allow me to thank you for your financial contribution which you, in fact, announced during the 74th Session of the Executive Committee back in 2023.”
In his speech, the High Commissioner commented in the following terms: “Angola have mentioned some interesting points, including the implementation of the succession clause for a certain number of refugee groups for which, in recent years or even several years, we have declared the termination clause and is taking steps, if I understand correctly, to absorb them”.
He said it was a useful reminder of something that, unfortunately, “is rare these days. But, when it happens, it is important that there is monitoring”, he said.
It should be noted that Angola declared its support for UNHCR in the implementation of the “Global Alliance”, a process that aims to end statelessness in replacement of the campaign carried out in the last decade entitled “Eu pertenço” or “I belong”.
Angola continues to be a host country, guaranteeing protection to more than 52,596 foreign citizens of different nationalities, allowing them access to all basic and primary services, on an equal footing with national citizens.
In addition, it also ensures identity records for refugees' families, with emphasis on their children born in Angola, who benefit from a birth certificate.
The Angolan Government continues to comply with the Convention on the Status of Stateless Persons “1954” and the Convention for the Reduction of Cases of Statelessness “1961”, by expanding the civil registration base of citizens residing in Angola and abroad, mainly in neighboring countries, in an inclusive and participatory process.
