Luanda - The Angolan Head of State, João Lourenço, appealed again on Tuesday, at the United Nations headquarters, for the need to put an end to the economic embargo against Cuba and the sanctions against Zimbabwe, current Chair of the Southern African Development Community (SADC).
Speaking at the general debate of the 79th UN General Assembly, in New York, he said that it is necessary to put an end to the embargo and sanctions, as they are unfair and inhumane, as they’ve increased the suffering of the respective people and greatly impeded the economic and social development of those countries.

João Lourenço condemned, on the other hand, the death and kidnapping of defenseless Israeli civilians on October 7 last year.
Following this, the Angolan statesman stressed, although Israel has the right to protect its territory, to guarantee the safety of its citizens and to seek to rescue hostages whose whereabouts are still uncertain, but as it has the responsibilities of a State, it should do everything to avoid the genocide that the world is witnessing in the Gaza Strip and the attacks by settlers and the expansion of settlements in the West Bank.
He emphasized that the main victims of this conflict are defenseless and vulnerable human beings, namely children, women, the elderly and the sick, killed indiscriminately not only by aviation and artillery bombs, but also because they are prevented by the force of weapons from accessing and enjoying the most basic rights of access to food, drinking water, medicines, housing and medical assistance, through the destruction of the main school, hospital, housing, energy and other infrastructures.
“We have seen the deaths in alarming numbers of journalists from international outlest, United Nations employees and workers from international humanitarian organizations, which is unacceptable and condemnable,” he noted.
According to the Angolan statesman, one cannot continue to allow that in just 11 months, in a small territory with no escape, close to 43,000 people are killed and that their perpetrators are not held accountable by the international community.
He noted that the international community cannot remain indifferent to this situation that threatens the existence of the Palestinian people, who have the same right to live in peace and security in the territory of their ancestors, as the Jewish people do.
“We are facing a fact that, once again, highlights the role of the United Nations, its decisions and resolutions which, if strictly and rigorously observed, solves the stalemate surrounding the creation of the State of Palestine, the only way capable of put a definitive end to the problem that the Middle East has been facing for decades”, he stressed.
