Luanda - National Assembly (AN) Speaker Carolina Cerqueira and the secretary general of the Parliamentary Forum of the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR), Onyango Kakoba, discussed the conflict resolution in Africa on Tuesday in Luanda.

Speaking to the press at the end of the audience, Onyango Kakoba praised the efforts undertaken by Angola, under the leadership of the head of State João Lourenço, aimed to address the conflict between the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Rwanda.

According to the parliamentary official, “(...) the region of the Great Lakes has been experiencing moments of tension lately, and Angola, with its experience, carries out actions in search of a peaceful solution, a fact that the Forum Parliamentarians must take advantage”.

However, the Angolan statesman was in Kigali (Rwanda) on Friday (11) and Saturday (12) in Kinshasa (DRC) to hold talks with his counterparts Paul Kagame and Félix Tshisekedi, respectively, following the tension affecting the relations between the neighbouring countries.

During the meetings, João Lourenço presented proposals to adapt the Roadmap for Peace in Luanda to the new reality experienced on the border between the two countries.

João Lourenço, who chairs the CIRGL, is also the African Union (AU) mediator in the crisis between Rwanda and the DRC.

As for the state of relations between the National Assembly and the ICGLR Parliamentary Forum, the official considered excellent, stressing that Angola is one of the few Member States of the organisation, with its quotas up to date.

The Parliamentary Forum of the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (CIRGL) is an inter-parliamentary organisation that brings together national parliaments from 12 states.

They are Angola, Burundi, Central African Republic (CAR), Republic of Congo, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Kenya, Rwanda, South Sudan, Sudan, Uganda, Tanzania and Zambia.
