Luanda – The National Assembly (Angolan parliament) was admitted Monday in Montreal, Canada, as full member of the Parliamentary Assembly of La Francophonie, during the 49th assembly of the organisation.
This process, Angop has learnt, began in 2023, when the Nationalk Assembly Speaker, Carolina Cerqueira participated in the assembly held in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.
According to a note from the National Assembly, Carolina Cerqueira has deemed such achievement a result of the dynamics of her institution’s diplomacy, adding that in joining the French-speaking parliaments of the world the National Assembly will engage in the sharing of common positions in favour of peace, co-operation and rapprochement among the French-language peoples.
She explained that Angola has common points with the Francophone countries in the framework of efforts turned to sustainable policies on development, climate change, social integration and regional development.
The Parliamentary Assembly of La Francophonie consists of representatives of 88 national and regional parliaments.
Among its main purposes are the promotion of democratic ideals and principles of the rule of law, fostering development and supporting mutual recognition of culture among the French-speaking countries as well as disseminating the French language.
