Kampala – The President of the Republic of Angola, João Lourenço, expressed Saturday in Kampala (Uganda), his hope that the spirit of unity of Mozambicans will prevail in resolving the post-electoral crisis affecting the country.
When speaking at the closing session of the Extraordinary Summit of the African Union (AU) on the Integrated Program for the Development of Agriculture on the continent, João Lourenço stressed that Mozambique, a country facing an armed conflict in Cabo Delgado that has not yet been definitively stabilized, is witnessing a new challenge to democracy.
Referring to the emergence of the post-election in this country, the Angolan statesman highlighted the fact that, in two months, it had already claimed the lives of two hundred Mozambicans, in addition to the destruction of important economic and social infrastructures. .
President João Lourenço added that, with the definitive announcement of the electoral results having been made, after the analysis of the electoral dispute by the competent entity, and the date set for the solemn investiture of the elected President, the continent and the world are convinced that the spirit of unity among Mozambicans.
This hope, he said, extends to the dialogue and consultation that are so necessary for the establishment of public order, the full functioning of institutions, the resumption of economic and commercial activity and the return to normal life for citizens.
“Mozambique and Mozambicans will smile again and work for the economic and social development of the country,” he said.
Still during his intervention, the Angolan Head of State, who also presided over the summit, expressed his concern about the war that the people of Sudan are facing, its major consequences for the lives and security of citizens, as well as for the economy of the country. neighboring countries, due to the high number of refugees they receive.
In this context, he called on the parties to the conflict to seriously consider the need to resolve the conflict through dialogue.
Still regarding the security situation on the African continent, the Head of State stressed that the conflict between the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Rwanda should see an outcome soon, “if we take into account the great advances achieved in recent months in the Luanda Process meetings, at ministerial level”.
However, he argued that “a summit at the highest level will certainly help to unblock the impasse to avoid a setback in the process and ensure that the understandings and gains already achieved are not wasted, particularly with regard to the neutralization of the Democratic Forces of Liberation of Rwanda (FDLR) and the withdrawal of the Rwandan military contingent from Congolese territory.
