Luanda - The foreign ministers of Angola (mediator), Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo met on Tuesday afternoon in Luanda to analyze the definitive peace proposal in the east of the DRC.
The meeting follows the ceasefire agreement that has been in force since the 4th of August, resulting from an understanding between the parties involved in the conflict, signed on the 30th of July, in Luanda, supervised by the Ad-Hoc verification mechanism.
Angola, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo have made significant and coordinated efforts to find a definitive security and peace solution in eastern DRC.
Angola, as mediator, has played a fundamental role in facilitating political-diplomatic dialogue between Rwanda and the DRC, aiming to stabilize this region of the Great Lakes.
The event is the result of the most recent trips that the President of the Republic of Angola, João Lourenço, as mediator appointed by the African Union, made to Kigali and Kinshasa, on the 11th and 12th of this month, respectively, during which he presented to the two statesmen the definitive peace proposal in the east of the DRC.
The conflict in eastern DRC, which has persisted since 2022, is led by forces from the M23 rebel movement, allegedly supported by Rwandan government forces.
The attacks, which resumed in December 2023, target civilian populations, as well as violating human rights, including the occupation of several areas in Congolese territory, which constitutes a clear violation of the Luanda and Nairobi Processes, harming diplomatic efforts and initiatives for peace and stability in that country neighboring Angola.
The meeting was chaired by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Téte António, as mediator, and was attended by the Minister of State, Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Francophonie of the DRC, Théresé Kayikwamba Wagner, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Rwanda International Cooperation, Olivier Jean Patrick Nduhungirehe.FMA/ART/DOJ
