Dundo - United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the Angolan government are creating the conditions for a new voluntary and organised repatriation of refugees from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), settled in Lóvua, Angola’s eastern Lunda Norte province.
The announced was made Wednesday in Dundo municipality, Lunda Norte, by UNHCR representative, Vito Trani.
The official highlighted that currently a survey is underway to find out the number of refugees interested in returning to their country of origin.
The official did not reveal the figure, but said that some refugees have expressed their will to return, and as long as the inquiry process is complete, the voluntary and organised repatriation will take place.
Vito Trani has been in Lunda Norte province with the US Government delegation for possible financial support, aimed to boost the social and economic reintegration of the refugees who want to stay in Angola.
In May 2017, an initial group made up of 35,000 DRC citizens arrived in the province of Lunda Norte, due to the violence in the Kassai zone.
The crisis forced the authorities to declare emergency situation.
UNHCR currently controls 6,506 refugees in Lovua refugee field and 2,826 in Dundo city, the remaining citizens were repatriated to their country.
