Huambo - Angolan writer Atanagildo Paulo is representing Africa in Latin America's biggest literary competition, named “World Book Review Awards”, with his work “A Morte da Dor” (The Death of Pain), in the category of best book of chronicles and short stories of 2024.
At the event, with more than 150 authors from all over the world in various categories, Atanagildo Paulo is also competing for the prize for best writer of 2024.
The voting process for the competition, with only one African contestant, began on Wednesday, January 1 and will end on 14 February this year, on the portal and digital platforms of the World Book Review magazine.
According to the organizers, the five finalists in each category will be announced on 15 February, with the winners scheduled to be announced on 15 March in the magazine's monthly edition.
Speaking to ANGOP, Atanagildo Paulo said that he is the only African competing for the biggest international prize in Latin America, in the categories of best Short Story and best Writer of 2024.
He hoped that with the votes of Angolans and others he would be able to win the prestigious competition, which is based in Brazil.
In addition to the book ‘The Death of Pain’, released in 2024, the author has three other literary works on the market, namely Caçador sem Carne (Hunter without Flesh), Prazer Veneno (Pleasure Poison) and Pétalas de Lágrimas (Petals of Tears).
Atanagildo Paulo is a journalist at the Angola National Radio (RNA) Station branch in Huambo Province, since 2006.
The writer has a degree in Sociology from the Higher Polytechnic Institute Sol Nascente of Huambo (2016).
He is also a musician with a CD entitled “A Honra” (The Honour), released in 2021. He is also a university lecturer.
It should be noted that the international Latin American Literary competition was once won by the Angolan writer Nituecheni Africano, with the book “O Emigrante da Web e suas Tolices” (The Web Emigrant and his foolishness).
