Luanda - The Minister of Culture, Tourism and Environment, Jomo Fortunato, will participate, on Friday, on the annual ceremony in honour of the arrival of the first 20 Angolan slaves, in the United States of America.
The ceremony, which marks the 402nd anniversary of the arrival of the first Africans from Angola, will be held at Tucker Cemetery, in the city of Hampton, Virginia.
The event aims to remember the journey of the Angolans and the historical trail they left for current generations.
Last May, the ministries of Culture, Tourism and Environment and Foreign Affairs, the Private Investment and Export Promotion Agency (AIPEX) and the Angolan embassy in the United States promoted, from Luanda, a workshop, in virtual format, whose theme was "The legacy of slavery for Africans and African-Americans: Cultural Heritage.
The first Portuguese ships carrying Africans, who had been kidnapped and sold as slaves in the territory that would become Angola, arrived in Jamestown, in the state of Virginia, at the time a British colony, in August 1619.
