Viana – At least 19,000 secondary school students from Viana municipality of the Luanda Province, will benefit in the next school year from scholarships in the scope of the Girls' Empowerment and Learning for All Project (PAT II), the municipal director of education, Madalena Massocolo, said on Friday.
Speaking to ANGOP, the government official said that the initiative aims to encourage students, especially young women, to continue their studies.
According to her, each scholarship holder will annually receive a registration bónus of 35,000 kwanzas, noting that the young girls with good results the same amount will be doubled.
“Young girls are the ones who dropout of school the most for various reasons, so in order to motivate them to stay in class, those who do well at school will receive a bonus of 35,000, totalling Kz 70,000”, she explained.
She said that the registration process would begin on 27 May, and that the programme would only cover pupils from schools in the districts of Vila Flor, Kikuxi, Zango and the Calumbo commune.
In this regard, the official appealed to parents and guardians to accompany their minor children to register at the respective schools in order to benefit from the scholarships.
In the 2022/2023 academic year, the municipality of Viana benefited from 14,91 scholarships.
PAT II is being developed by the Ministry of Education, with funding from the World Bank totalling USD 250,000.
The scholarship programme, which was officially presented in October 2022, is expected to benefit 900,000 public and public-private secondary school students across the country.
