Huambo – Six new postgraduate courses will be taught in the current academic year (2023/2024), at the José Eduardo dos Santos University (UJES), in the central Huambo Province, which is scheduled to start next November, the Rector of the institution, Virgínia Quartin, said Tuesday.
The Rector was speaking in the ambit of the working visit that the Vice-President of the Republic, Esperança da Costa, is to carry out from today until Friday to the central province, which includes a trip to the public higher education institution and to different organic units, with emphasis on the faculties of Law, Economics and Veterinary Medicine.
These numbers, she added, include the first doctoral course in Agro-food Technology, three master's degrees and two specialties.
According to Virgínia Quartin, the courses, funded by the European Union, will be taught at the faculties of Agricultural Sciences, Veterinary Medicine and the Polytechnic Institute.
The project has a partnership with international reference organizations such as the Agro institutes of Montpellier (France), Superior de Agronomia de Portugal and, at national level, the Agricultural Technical and Food Technical institutes of the Rainha Ginga Mbandi University of Malanje.
Regarding the needs of the University, she referred, above all, to issues that enable more practical teaching, namely labs, workshops and experimental fields.
To overcome this, she defended greater financial availability, since the existing budget is insufficient to purchase equipment.
According to the UJES Rector, one way to minimize this is to turn to companies that have these skills, in which the University places students for internships or practical classes.
Created in 2010, the José Eduardo dos Santos University (UJES) comprises the faculties of Agricultural Sciences, Law, Economics, Medicine, Veterinary Medicine and a Polytechnic Institute, and for the current academic year it has enrolled a number of 7 769 students in the 16 existing degree courses.
Until the 2020/2021 academic year, UJES belonged to the 5th Academic Region, which included the provinces of Bié, Moxico and Huambo, but it is currently limited only to the last one.
Along with the José Eduardo dos Santos University, the other public higher education organization in the province of Huambo is the Instituto Superior de Ciências da Educação (ISCED) - Higher Institute of Education Sciences.
Also noteworthy are the private higher education institutes, namely Ekuikui II, Politécnico Lusíada and Politécnico Sol Nascente.
