Luanda - The minister of Education Luísa Grilo announced Thursday that at least seven schools in Luanda will be given a facelift, as part of the Project Learning for All and Empowerment of Girls (PATII).
The minister, who was speaking to journalists on the sidelines of a visit paid by the Vice-President of the Republic, Esperança da Costa, to some primary and secondary schools in Luanda, said the schools to receive facelift will not receive new students in the next term, due to the repair works.
"We’ll only create accommodation conditions for the students that are attending classes", the minister said.
The minister expressed concern over the conditions found at Njinga Mbande, a secondary school whose infrastructure is in notable degradation state and which lacks almost everything.
The minister said that PATII project includes scholarships grant for students enrolled from grade 7 onwards, with a subsidy to help families, especially the neediest ones, in terms of transport and purchase of school materials to encourage girls not to drop out of school.
In the first phase, 500 pupils of Viana and Icolo e Bengo municipalities are benefiting from this subsidy of 8,000 kwanzas per month.
She added that one of the main components of PAT II is to provide better conditions to school infrastructures through the construction and repair of schools.
The minister recalled the importance of training education agents for the improvement of teaching quality and the reinforcement of human capital and management skills.
The Nzinga Mbandi headmistress, Laura Matos, said the school has not received a facelift for more than 20 years and confirmed its current state of degradation. FMA/AL/Amp/jmc
