Luanda - Angolan Government plans to increase the percentage of gross domestic product allocated to education from 2.3 to more than 4.2% by 2050, aimed to expand services and improve the quality of education.
The initiative is part of the long-term Angola 2050 Strategy, currently under discussion, where the Executive recognises that achieving the objectives and goals in education will require doubling the weight of investments in the sector in GDP.
Currently, the percentage of GDP allocated to education is among the lowest in Africa.
In addition to public resources, the Government also hopes to count on international support, as Angola has not attracted foreign aid in the sector and receives even less international aid for education than some high-income countries.
This aid can strengthen the education budget and enable the country to achieve higher levels of education coverage and quality.
Raising current aid levels to the SADC average (from US$5 to US$26 per person of school age) would add over US$200 million to the annual budget.
