Luanda – The first day of classes in public schools in the province of Luanda was marked by low student attendance, ANGOP has learned.

A tour carried out in some schools revealed that teachers were present in the classrooms waiting for students, while in others the process of confirming enrolments is still underway.

According to its pedagogical director, Jorgina Gonçalves, despite the student absenteeism, all the material and human conditions have been created for the school year to run smoothly.

According to the director, the student unit is still undergoing the process of confirming enrolments for students who for some reason have not yet done so.

She reported that the institution has 30 classrooms available for eight courses.

At the Luanda Middle School of Economics (IMEL), a small number of students were found ready to start classes. However, there have been delays in publishing class lists, a situation that could be resolved this week, according to a source at the institution.

In turn, the pedagogical director of the “Nossa Senhora Mãe do Bom Conselho” secondary school (urban district of Ingombota), Inês Lofa, lamented the absence of students in the classroom, appealing to parents and guardians to take their children to school.

She reported that this school year the institution will have 556 students and 12 teachers, stressing that there is great motivation on the part of the teaching staff for the successful start of classes.

This school year, some 9.9 million students were enrolled throughout the country, in the various subsystems of general education.

According to the official calendar, general education teaching and educational activities will take place from 2 September to 31 July 2025.

The calendar covers 48 school weeks, 41 of which will be dedicated to teaching activities and nine national holidays and public holidays. AB/MCN/TED/DOJ
