Mbanza Kongo - The Customs Tax Police prevented, in the province of Zaire, the departure of a shipment of various goods to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), on suspicion of the crime of “controlled products smuggling”, the local command of the National Police (PN) reported on Monday.
According to the local PN spokesperson, superintendent Luís Bernardo, who gave a summary of the weekend's activities, the seizure was a result of a police surveillance in the Santo António river channel, when two citizens on board a boat were transporting goods camouflaged in tarpaulins.
Corn flour, rice, pasta, beans, clothes, shoes and kitchen utensils are among the products.
Luís Bernardo informed that it is considered a crime of tax evasion, according to the General Tax Code and added that PN also seized three three-wheeled motorbikes, without registration plates, which were full of basic food products.
However, the suspects were presented to the judicial authorities.
The province of Zaire shares a vast land and river border with the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
