Cuito – More than 400 national and foreign exhibitors have been participating, since Monday, August 19, in the 5th edition of the Potato and Corn Fair, in the city of Cuito, Bié province.
The event aims to generate a turnover of approximately 500 million kwanzas (US$560.980), compared to the last edition's 400 million.
On the occasion, the governor of Bié, Celeste Adolfo, who opened the event, highlighted the increase in the number of exhibitors in this edition.
According to the governor, as the years pass, Bié has shown itself to be a “true” agricultural power, judging by the interest of producers in assisting the Executive in diversifying the national economy, aiming to free the country from “excessive” dependence on oil exports.
With the holding of the V edition, according to the governor, the aim is also to awaken the entrepreneurial spirit, mainly among youngsters, as well as boost local production and encourage citizens to take up the culture of agricultural production.
In this edition, more than 1,500 tons of corn and 500 tons of potatoes are available, as well as beans, peanut, tomatoes, onions, cassava and other crops.
The opening of the event was attended by the Secretary of State for Agriculture and Livestock, Castro Camarada, and the governors of the provinces of Huambo, Moxico and Cuando-Cubango, namely Pereira Alfredo, Ernesto Muangala and José Martins.
The IV edition, held last year, in the city of Cuito, had the participation of 300 exhibitors.
The first Reindeer Potato and Corn Fair took place in the Municipality of Chinguar, from August 8 to 10, 2019, and more than 100 tons of corn and 50 tons of reindeer potatoes were sold.
