Menongue - The Criminal Investigation Service (SIC) thwarted, in Menongue, capital of Cuando Cubango, the smuggling, to the Republic of Namibia, of 10,700 liters of fuel, of which 10,000 of gasoline and 740 of diesel.
Speaking to the press on Tuesday, the spokesman for the SIC in Cuando Cubango, Francisco Calei, said that the seized fuel was transported in drums of 25 liters each, by two heavy vehicles, which were heading to the municipality of Calai, on the border with Namibia.
The seizure, which took place around 11 pm on Sunday (the 10th), culminated, according to the SIC officer, with the arrest of two national citizens aged between 43 and 50 years, as alleged owners.
According to Francisco Calai, those involved purchased the fuel at existing sales pumps in Menongue, in small quantities and stored it, without proper security measures, in backyards, in the Paz and Maculusso neighborhoods, on the outskirts of Menongue.
He warned that such actions, in addition to harming the national economy, jeopardize the safety of citizens and their property, in the event of an incident.
He called on citizens to denounce such practices.
It should be noted that, during the current year, this is the sixth case of fuel smuggling crime in the province of Cuando Cubango, in which more than 50,000 liters of fuel had been seized, including gasoline and diesel, which culminated in the arrest of eight national citizens. LMZ/ALK/PLB/DOJ
