Huambo - The Secretary of State for Energy, Arlindo Manuel Carlos, said on Saturday in Huambo that projects to expand the electricity grid are being made viable for the country's economic sustainability.

The official made the statement at the end of an assessment visit to electricity generation infrastructures in the municipalities of Bailundo, Cachiungo, Ecunha and Huambo, which are benefiting from programs to expand the home supply and public lighting.

Arlindo Carlos spoke of the need to create an efficient electricity system capable of sustaining the industrial segments and supplying the population in the communities, in order to promote sustainable development and poverty reduction in the various parts of the country.

The official expressed his satisfaction with the degree of implementation of the respective projects in Huambo province, as they will contribute to the quality of electricity distribution in the various localities and leverage the economic development of the Central Plateau.

In Huambo province, at least 4,000 connections have been made, out of the 37,000 household connections planned in this region, as part of the strategic plan for rural electrification, electricity transmission, and substation and distribution network, in a project scheduled for completion this year.

So far, the municipalities of Bailundo, Caála, Ecunha and Huambo, as well as the commune of Calenga, have been connected to the national electricity grid from the Belém do Dango substation.

Currently, according to the National Statistics Institute (INE), Huambo province has an estimated population of two million inhabitants.

Made up of 11 municipalities (Bailundo, Caála, Cachiungo, Chicala-Cholohanga, Chinjenje, Ecunha, Huambo, Londuimbali, Longonjo, Mungo and Ucuma), Huambo, located 600 kilometers south of the country's capital (Luanda), Huambo has a territorial extension of 35,771 square kilometers.
