Luanda - The Minister of Fisheries and Marine Resources, Carmen Neto, on Wednesday in Luanda expressed the need to expand aquaculture along the Angolan coast, through mariculture, with a view to strengthening the process of diversification of the country's economy.
To this end, the minister, who was speaking during the 4th Conference of Economia & Mercado magazine on the blue economy, pointed to the attraction of financial resources through the search for private investments, international partnerships and the optimization of public resources, so that together we can reach a good port with this activity.
As for the deficit of fish in the Angolan market, the minister highlighted the practice of aquaculture in a sustainable way as one of the ways to meet the country's needs.
Data from the Angolan Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources estimate that the aquaculture sector will contribute, this year, with a production of 15 thousand tons of fish, in captivity, against the 12 thousand obtained in 2023.
In 2023, production levels increased by eight thousand tons, compared to two thousand in the previous year (2022).
On the other hand, Carmen Neto stressed that inspection is being restructured, to reverse the current situation, taking into account that the State loses about 20 billion kwanzas/month due to illegal unregulated fishing.
The 4th Conference of the journal Economia & Mercado on the blue economy aimed to discuss and explore topics related to the implementation of the National Strategy for the Sea of Angola 2030 (ENMA).
The one-day event brought together experts who discussed the challenges and opportunities of the blue economy and shared experiences and strategies that have driven the sustainable growth of maritime resources.
Data indicate that the sea can represent considerable growth in the medium and long term, with estimates indicating an increase of 23% in Gross Domestic Product (GDP), 18% in employment and a decrease of up to 10% in carbon dioxide emissions. HM/QCB/DOJ
