Luanda - The reference prices of the main staple products fell by 18.2 percent in the week between 21 and 27 of March, according to figures from Angola's Strategic Food Reserve (REA).
Compared to November 2021, a bag of wheat flour (25 kg) went from 23,330 kwanzas to 10,450 kwanzas, whilst corn flour (25 kg) went from 13,800 to 10,850.
The bag of sugar (50 kg), which cost 24,200 kwanzas, went to 21,900 kwanzas, Thai rice (25 kg), from 11,737 to 9,400 kwanzas, and Myanmar rice (25 kg) from 10,000 to 8,700 kwanzas.
According to the data, a box of 12 bottles of soy cooking oil (1 litre) went from 17,450 kwanzas to 14,150 kwanzas, and a box of chicken thigh (10 kg) dropped from 10,190 to 8,500 kwanzas.
According to the REA document, the overall average price drop was 16,801 kwanzas in 2021 and 13,750 kwanzas in 2022, with a variation of 18.2 kwanzas.
These figures, according to the document, are valid for the entire national territory, and compared to the month of November 2021, when the REA, which was activated on 21 December 2021, had not yet been set up. The highlight goes to wheat flour, which fell 54.6 percent, and to maize flour, 21.4 percent.
Price behaviour on the international market
As for the current price level in dollars (Usd), sugar costs 18 Usd, down six Usd, beans cost 58 Usd, up three Usd, influenced by the Covid-19 effect and by the war in Ukraine. Rice costs Usd 16, up 42, and corn Usd 748, up 28, with energy, transport and logistics prices soaring.
According to REA data, wheat is now priced at 1,091 Usd, up 27 Usd, with only sugar falling six percent from November 2021.
