Cazenga - The director of the National Institute for Support to Fishing Industries and Technological Research, Manuel Fernandes said on Wednesday in Luanda that the potential available in Angola for the practice of aquaculture places the country among the top places in the Southern African Development Community (SADC).
Speaking to the press during the first Provincial Conference on Aquaculture, the official recalled that Angola has favourable natural conditions for the development of aquaculture activity and to ensure the food sustainability of families.
Among the various potentialities, he pointed out the number of rivers in the country, with conditions to shelter several species of freshwater fish, such as tilapia, catfish, shrimp, among other shoals.
He also stressed that marine resources, oceans, rivers, lagoons and ponds are natural and fundamental resources for food security, nutrition and economic progress in the country, ensuring the well-being of populations.
According to Manuel Fernandes, the province of Luanda has favorable climatic conditions for the development of a sustainable and strong economy, with inland fishing and fishing area important for the development of aquaculture.
He also said that the Executive's commitment to this segment represents an added value, as long as resources are used responsibly and not illegally to prioritize and sustain natural resources.
He stressed that the rational exploitation of fishing resources allows for an increase in national production, food security and diversification of the economy, aiming to improve the country's socio-economic situation.
Regarding the first Aquaculture Conference in Luanda, the source considered it an event that will help in the search for subsidies for the development of communities and increase fishing production.
In turn, the director of the provincial office of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries of Luanda, João Pedro, explained that the current agricultural year was not the best and desired, due to the floods that flooded many crop fields.
He said that Luanda has five agricultural municipalities, namely Quissama, Icolo and Bengo, Cacuaco, Belas and Viana, the others with less chain in agricultural production.
The first one-day provincial conference on aquaculture in Luanda addressed issues related to the potential of agriculture in Luanda, current situation and governance of aquaculture, challenges and future prospects. PLA/QCB/DOJ
