Angola records 17.9 percent drop in food imports

Luanda – Angola recorded a 17.9 percent drop in food imports in the second quarter of 2024, the Minister of State for Economic Coordination, José de Lima Massano has said, ANGOP has learnt.

The minister disclosed the information during a meeting of the Council of the Republic, on food security in Angola and national production, a statement has said.

According to the statement, the main goods that contributed to this reduction are palm oil (reduction of 79.8%), cooking oil (67.1%), chicken thighs (34.3%) and rice, with a reduction of 8.4%.

It adds that there were, however, food products that showed counter cyclical behavior, such as the sugar (increase of 24.4%).

As regards the impact on the foreign exchange market, the reduction in food imports in 2023 generated direct savings of around 940 million US dollars, while the degree of coverage of domestic production for the fishing sector is set at 102.7 percent.

The increase in food supply brought about by the success of the 2023/2024 agricultural campaign, has had a favorable impact on prices in the economy, since, In the last three months, the statement adds, the decline in the monthly variation in consumer prices coincides with the period of greater harvest intensity.

Early in July, the Consumer Price Index (IPC) registered a1.68 percent variation, which represents a deceleration of 0.39 percent compared to the monthly variation in June, which was above 2 percent. VC/AMP
