Luanda - The widow of Angola's first president, Maria Eugénia Neto, said Friday that the naming of the new Luanda International Airport after the nationalist is a tribute to all Angolans.
Speaking to the journalists on the sidelines of the inauguration of the infrastructure, she said that it materialised a dream of the Founder of the Nation to develop Angola and connect it to the world.
Maria Eugénia Neto emphasised that it is "a great airport and that a lot can be done through it", including promoting culture, making it a hub for attracting young people to literature, as Agostinho Neto was also a man of culture.
Located in the urban district of Bom Jesus, in the municipality of Icolo e Bengo, the new airport infrastructure, valued at USD 2.8 billion, occupies an area of land of 1324 hectares and can handle a volume of cargo of 130,000 tonnes/year.
According to technical studies, it is Africa's third largest airport in terms of annual passenger volume. The expected number is 15 million passengers a year, 10 million on international flights and five million on domestic flights. ART/DAN/DOJ
