Moçâmedes – South-western Namibe Province will benefit until December this year from 25 megawatts of clean energy from the Caraculo photovoltaic power plant, which is under construction, said Tuesday in Moçâmedes Rui Bastos, the project director.
Talking to ANGOP, the director revealed that 46,000 solar panels are already in stock and 220 holes have also been drilled, where the panels will be placed, so that, “by December we’ll have concluded the first phase, which will provide 25 megawatts to strengthen the distribution grid”.
Rui Bastos said that at the moment, work is underway to install photovoltaic panels, which will serve to transfer energy.
According to the representative of the Saipem company, the project that employs 230 people will increase the production of renewable energy which will contribute to the reduction of Angola´s energy deficit.
The Caraculo photovoltaic power plant will allow the reduction in diesel consumption for the thermal power stations and the reduction of carbon dioxide emissions.
The project also includes the installation of water systems in Caraculo, aiming to promote agriculture, livestock watering and for human consumption.
The project will have a total capacity of 50 megawatts-peak, which will be implemented in two phases, being the first of 25 megawatts and will improve the living conditions of the population and boost business environment with the creation of energetic conditions, with emphasis on the provinces of Namibe and Huila.
The official added that it will help to reduce diesel consumption for thermal power plants, where Namibe is mainly sustained by these plants for energy supply, as well as the emission of greenhouse gases.
Therefore, it should be noted that the investment of roughly USD 42 million is to last for 25 years.
With the start of this power station its expected a saving of about USD 28 million to replace renewable energies for the diesel that sustains the thermal power plants, in the first phase of the Caraculo photovoltaic power plant.
All the technology that is being assembled in this project is from China and Europe.
It is important to highlight that more than ten thousand inhabitants live in this area of Caraculo, most of them cattle breeders and small farmers who are engaged in growing vegetables and cereals for their livelihood.
