Luanda - Minister of State for Economic Coordination Manuel Nunes Júnior Tuesday urged the port managers from the West and Central Africa to find energy solutions and reducing carbon dioxide in the ports in order to ensure sustainable development of the their countries.

The nations should pursue balanced solutions to cope with the challenges of climate change, Manuel Nunes Júnior told an opening session of the 42nd Annual Council of the Port Management Association of West and Central Africa
(AGPAOC).

The minister highlighted the Angolan Executive’s commitment to energy transition.

In his speech, the official voiced concern about the likely energy solutions for port infrastructure, for technical and technological solutions, as well as the treatment of liquid and solid waste.

Manuel Nunes Júnior reiterated the construction of important transport infrastructures underway in the country, which allowed the transport of cargo and passengers with
greater comfort and safety.

“We are going to complete the construction of the Deep Water Maritime Terminal in Caio, northern Cabinda province, as well as start the project for the adjacent Free Trade Zone. We have an ongoing Integrated Development project for the Bay of Moçâmedes, among others”, he stressed.

He is of the view that these projects make it possible to increase production and export capacity, above all, of mineral resources, as well as to boost other sectors, with particular emphasis on tourism and culture.

“Infrastructures must be suitable for reducing greenhouse gas emissions, as part of innovative and effective solutions to mitigate these effects”, said the Minister
of State.

The four-day event will allow the managers of ports in Africa to discuss ongoing environmental sustainability policies and the challenges of port and maritime
ecosystems.

The West and Central Africa Port Management Association (AGPAOC) was created in 1972.

Angola joined AGPAOC in 1986, during the 12th Annual Council held in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
