Luena - Fish catches fell by 12 tons in Luacano municipality, Moxico province, due to a shortage of working resources, the head of the local agriculture department, França Mussole, told ANGOP on Monday.
According to França Mussole the lack of labor has reduced fish production from 100 percent to 30 percent in the municipality of Luacano, Moxico province.
He added that production has fallen compared to previous years, due to a lack of support for fishermen to buy fishing equipment such as boats, nets, hooks and lines, among others.
França Mussole said that in the first quarter of 2023 the municipality produced 42.57 tons of fish, 12 tons less than in the previous period.
He recalled that fishing is the main economic activity carried out by the municipality's inhabitants, and advocated actions to acquire canoes, nets, refrigerators and means of transportation to sell the fish elsewhere.
Luacano municipality covers 13,573 square kilometers and is bordered to the north by the municipalities of Luau (Moxico) and Muconda (Lunda Sul), to the east and south by the Upper Zambezi and to the west by Cameia.
The climate is tropical, humid, dry and cool in winter (June to August), while in the rainy season it is hot (October to April). The annual temperature is always above 20 degrees Celsius, sometimes reaching a maximum of 35 degrees in September and October. ISAU/TC/YD/TED/AMP
