Caxito - The National Coffee Institute (INCA) wants to collaborate with some of the country's universities to gain more knowledge about coffee growing in Angola, the director-general of INCA Vasco Gonçalves said Thursday in Bengo Province.

To this end, a memorandum of understanding has already been signed between the institution and several universities (without naming them) with the aim of promoting not only coffee consumption, but also matters related to production.

Speaking on "The current state of coffee growing in Angola, opportunities and prospects," as part of the 1st Provincial Coffee Conference, he said that Coffea canephora, produced in the provinces of Bengo, Uíge, Cuanza Norte and Zaire and Cuanza Sul, Cabinda, represents 90% of national production.

He said that 77.68 per cent of production is carried out by family farms and 22.32% by the business sector.

Without giving comparative figures, he revealed that 4,683 tons of commercial coffee were produced in 2023.

Cuanza Sul province produced 2,430 tons, Uíge 2,181 tons and Bengo 72 tonnes. This production generates an annual turnover of more than 19 billion Cuanzas for local producers and traders.

Approximately 300,000 people in the country are involved in coffee production, from production, transport, benefits and exports.

In Angola, coffee is produced in more than 10 provinces and there are different varieties.

The event in Bengo aims to publicise the potential of Coffee canephora and create a space for various producers in the country to exchange experiences. FS/CJ/IF/MRA/DOJ
