Luanda - Public investment for the water supply of Luanda, the country's capital, will exceed USD 2.5 billion, the minister of Energy and Water João Baptista Borges announced this Friday.
Addressing the press, at the end of the 7th ordinary session of the National Water Council (CNA, acronym in Portuguese), the minister specified that it was a significant investment effort, requiring structured financing which involves several banks, depending on the credit guarantee.
João Baptista Borges stressed that the water supply of the Angolan capital was one of the priorities of the current governance mandate.
For the minister, this funding is very important if it is compared to the water supply system of the Huambo city, whose project cost around USD 200 million.
According to the official, the projects related to the water supply of the Angolan capital are mainly launched, since it (Luanda) could have at least 10 million inhabitants by 2023.
With this population, he added, the need for consumption is more than a million 200,000 cubic meters of water per day. "Right now, the water supply capacity is 400,000 cubic meters, less than 50%," he said.
"This means that most of the Luanda population consumes water which is provided by tanker trucks and it is a major concern, because this water does not always have the required quality, with an impact on Health indicators and also has prices that are not affordable for most of the population, "he said.
He noted that the Executive plans to develop projects that aim to fill this deficit, in the short term, with more than 600,000 cubic meters of water.
