Bengo government seeks to revive coffee growing

Caxito - The Bengo provincial government has said it aims to revive coffee growing in several municipalities of the province to recover the production levels reached in the past.

The provincial government is holding the First Coffee Conference in Caxito on March 7 to advertise the potential of robust coffee and create a space for the exchange of experiences between various producing countries.

The deputy governor for the Political, Social and Economic sector, José Bartolomeu Pedro, said the event will discuss "the current state of coffee growing in Angola, Opportunities and prospects, Potentialities and opportunities for coffee growing in the province and Rehabilitation and renovation of plantations.

The MuKafé project and Uganda's experiences in producing robust seedlings, the role of the Recafé cooperative in relaunching the crop, the experiences of the JMV coffee roasting company Gabela - a success story, the role of Angolan banks and the Development Fund will also be analyzed.

Twenty-two countries have been invited to the event, including Namibia, Portugal, Brazil, China, Spain, France, Turkey, Serbia, Lebanon, Japan, the United States, Egypt, Israel, Russia, Morocco, Vietnam, Norway, Belgium, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands and Uganda.

The provincial government has said it hopes to strengthen the knowledge of producers (small, medium and large producers) and open up banks to finance farms.

Bengo province controls 288 coffee farms, of which only 58 are in operation. The remaining 225 located in the municipalities of Dembos, Pango Aluquém, Bula Atumba and Nambuangongo are not fully operational. MD/IF/AMP
