Moçâmedes – The Moçâmedes Railway Company (CFM) will soon receive a financing of USD 700 million for a project that is intended to connect Angola and Namibia through a 400-kilometre rail line.
According to the Namibe Province head of the CFM, Francisco Mário, the financing is to be released by the Global Business Development (GBD). The project is to kick off as soon as the Namibe Port current rehabilitation programme is completed, which is predicted to be in 2025.
The CFM official was speaking to the press last Thursday at the end of a meeting between members of the Namibe Province government and repreenttaives of the GBD, during which the mentioned plan, dubbed “Trans-Cunene”, was laid out.
He assured that the project will bring about a lot of gains, starting with the idea that it will provide job for young people and facilitate commercial exchanges in Angola’s south corridor. It can also provide leverage for the transport system of the SADC region.
On his turn, GBD official Harold Luttchau manifested the company’s interest to develop the work, having mentioned the advantages that commercial exchanges in the said zone will bring about.
He confirmed that the project will not only benefit Angola and Namibia, but also Botswana, Zimbabwe, and Zambia, as well as other African countries.
