Uíge – Copper production at the Mavoio mine in the municipality of Maquela do Zombo, Angolan northern Uíge province, will begin in 2025, the Secretary of State for Mineral Resources, Jânio Correa Victor, announced on Thursday.
The Mavoio copper mine, which includes those of Tetelo and Bembe, has more than 40 million tons of pure copper underground, according to data obtained from prospecting carried out more than 14 years ago.
Jánio Correa Victor announced this on the sidelines of the conference on investments in the mineral resources sector, Oil and Gas, which is taking place in the city of Uíge under the motto “Investment in the mining and oil sector as a lever for economic diversification”.
He said that, at this stage, equipment is being installed in the mining site, after the environmental and economic study, to later begin the production stage.
“We hope that this project will give a great boost to the development of the province and the national economy, as well as guaranteeing employment for youth,” he said.
He informed that there is the possibility of prospecting for oil and gas in the province, with ANPG carrying out prospecting and research work in the region's interior basins.
In relation to mineral resources, the official said that projects are underway in this province, namely quartz, an initiative that is already in the production phase.
The conference is addressing the country's mining potential, opportunities to boost the production chain of mineral resources and biofuel strategies, opportunities to implement the strategy for awarding oil concessions, potential for oil exploration in the Kassange interior basins, importance of insurance in the mineral resources sector, among others.
The event is attended by the chairpersons of companies under the Ministry of Mineral Resources, Oil and Gas, national directors, businesspeople and municipal administrators in the region. NM/JAR/DOJ
