Luanda - Angolan government has pledged to secure electrification for about six million people residing in the southern and eastern regions of the country in the next five years.

According to the government, the initiative is part of the Executive's strategic plan for the electrification of the country.

In the centre and south, the electrification will be carried out through the provinces of Huambo and Huíla (Lubango), while in east, via the Capanda Dam, located in the north-east province of Malanje.

For the eastern project, in particular, according to data from the Ministry of Energy and Water (MINEA), a line has been mobilised that will cover the three eastern provinces.

They are Lunda Norte , Lunda Sul and Moxico, including the provinces of Bié and Malanje.

For the electrification of the southern part, which includes Namibe, Huíla and Cuando Cubango, an investment is about to be approved, according to the minister of Energy and Water, João Baptista Borges.

“The important thing now is to bring electricity production to the south and east of the country, where diesel is still used for energy production,” said João Baptista Borges.

In addition to the focus on electrifying these areas of the country, in general, MINEA predicts that by 2025, half of the Angolan population will have access to electricity.
