Caxito – Forty Angolans and three Vietnamese citizens are detained for illegal fishing in the territorial waters of Barra do Dande, Bengo Province.
Speaking to the press, the coordinator of the regional fisheries, aquaculture and salt inspection center in the provinces of Bengo and Cuanza-Norte, Alves Adão, explained that Angolan legislation defines artisanal fishing as an exclusive activity for national citizens, which is why three Vietnamese were detained.
He reported that the 40 Angolans detained are accused of using illegal techniques (trawling) which, according to the Biological and Aquatic Resources Law (Law 6A/04 of 8 October), is prohibited.
He explained that trawling, especially in prohibited areas, has harmful consequences for the biomass and development of fish, leading to the extinction of some species.
The commander of the 18th unit of the Bengo Border Guard Police, chief superintendent José António, reported that six vessels were also seized as part of maritime control.
He said that the unit he heads is prepared to act and thwart related crimes along the sea coast under his responsibility.
In March this year, six artisanal fishing vessels were seized and 36 fishermen were arrested, including six of Vietnamese nationality and 30 Angolans, for illegal fishing.
In the last four months, the regional fisheries, aquaculture and salt inspection center in the provinces of Bengo and Cuanza-Norte seized 20 artisanal fishing vessels for illegally carrying out the activity.
