New studies underway on Matala’s irrigated perimeter

Matala – twenty-two years after its first restructuring, a feasibility study is now underway to prepare the project for a new update of all infrastructures in the Matala irrigated perimeter, in the southern Huíla Province.

Among the infrastructures are the 42-kilometer-long irrigation line, the largest in the country, the tomato concentrate factory located in the municipality of Capelongo and agricultural production conservation chambers.

The study is being developed by the consulting company Sirius BRL and has funding from the French Alliance for development, the aim of which is to improve production levels in the perimeter currently estimated at 40k tons of several products

According to the company's consultant, João Kawendji, specialists from the consultancy and technicians from the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry visited the more than 40 kilometers of the canal that covers almost 11 thousand hectares and talked the producers, with the aim of surveying all data to verify the reality of infrastructures.

The preliminary results of the interventions that can be carried out were presented Monday, in a workshop, with the participation of producers and among the suggestions, is the construction of more than 5 kilometers of extension line and the requalification of the tomato concentrate factory, are among the proposals that will appear in the project, according to João Kawendji.

Built in 1950 and rehabilitated in 2002, with public funds, the irrigated perimeter of the Matala has a 43-kilometer long canal and 11 thousand hectares and with an annual production that amounts to more than 40 thousand tons of different products.
