Lucapa - The ongoing construction works of the photovoltaic power plant located in Lucapa municipality, eastern Lunda Norte province, with the capacity to produce 7.19 megawatts of electricity, is expected to be concluded in March 2024, ANGOP has learnt.

The power plant is expected to be handed over to the government in May 2024, after the definitive tests have been completed.

Currently the assembly of the buildings that will house the training and monitoring rooms and the technical energy and water networks is being completed.

There are also plans to build two medium and low voltage lines of 12 and 10 kilometers and to install ten transformer stations, among other equipment.

The 12,90 solar panels, ten transformer stations and the support structures comprising civil engineering and the technical part have already been installed.

The power plant, which is 84 percent completed, is being installed in a 13.52 hectares area and is valued at 19.7 million Euros, 80 percent financed by Sweden and 20 percent by South Africa.

With a production capacity of 7.19 megawatts it will be interconnected with the thermal power station that has an installed capacity of 8 megawatts. The project will supply power to 1,700 household connections benefiting 8,500 inhabitants.

Angola is pioneering the installation of renewable energy, with seven projects in the provinces of Lunda Norte, Lunda Sul, Moxico, Benguela, Bié and Huambo.

Authorities have said they expect the solar energy to benefit around 1.2 million families across the country, with the aim of promoting access to clean and cheap electricity.

The municipality of Lucapa is 150 kilometers from  Dundo city and has more than 150,000 inhabitants. HD/AMP
