Kampala – The continent's heads of State and Government will be meeting today, in Kampala, Uganda, on the third and final day of the work of the Extraordinary Summit of the African Union (AU) on the Comprehensive Program for Development of Agriculture in Africa (CAADP).

Angolan President João Lourenço, who arrived in the Ugandan capital on Friday, will chair the meeting as first vice-president of the Bureau of the Assembly of the African Union (AU), at a time when the month of February approaches, occasion in which Angola will assume leadership of the continental organization for a period of one year.

The AU Extraordinary Summit on CAADP, which began on Thursday, ends today with the adoption of the Kampala Declaration.

The event will review the memorandum of the ministerial sessions on the CAADP, its Draft Strategy and Action Plan for the period 2026-2036 and the Draft Kampala Declaration on Creating Resilient and Sustainable Agri-food Systems in Africa.

The summit of heads of State and Government was preceded, on Friday, by a joint ministerial meeting of the heads of Foreign Affairs and Agriculture, in which Angolan ministers from the respective areas participated, namely Téte António and Isaac dos Anjos.

The meeting also features experts responsible for agriculture (forestry, fisheries and livestock), rural development, water and the environment.

CAADP has been a fundamental framework for the transformation of agriculture in Africa since its creation in 2003 with the Maputo Declaration, where African Heads of State and Government committed to allocating at least 10% of public expenditure to agriculture to achieve an annual growth rate of 6% in agricultural Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

The program is aligned with Agenda 2063 of the African Union, an organization created on May 26, 2002, when its Constitutive Act came into force, replacing the Organization of African Unity (OAU), created in 1963. The continental organization brings together 55 African countries. HM/VC/DOJ
