Luanda – The Caraculo Photovoltaic plant in the south-western Namibe Province has a physical execution of 90% in its first phase and is scheduled to start operating in the first quarter of this year.
According to the National Fuel Society of Angola (Sonangol) CEO, Gaspar Martins, while speaking at the presentation of Sonangol´s provisional accounts for 2022, the first phase of the project foresees a production capacity of 25 megawatts of clean energy and in the second phase another 25 megawatts will be added.
Similar to the Caraculo project, Sonangol is also implementing another Photovoltaic plant in the Quilemba region of the southern Huila Province with the partnership of the TotalEnergies multinational company and for its first phase it is foreseen the production of 35 megawatts and to subsequently be added another 45 to reach 80 megawatts of power.
The national oil company is also working with German group GAUFF Engineering to build and operate a green hydrogen plant and its products, a project located next to the Barra do Dande Ocean Terminal, and expects to produce 280,000 tonnes per year once the initiative becomes operational.
In 2022, Sonangol established its energy transition strategy for the period 2022-2030, based on the use of hydrocarbons as the source of financing the process, with gas as the transitional energy source for renewable energies.
