Sumbe - The fish catch in the first half of this year in Cuanza Sul Province stood at 8,000 tons, compared to 11,000 in the same period in 2023, the Provincial Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture announced on Wednesday.
Speaking to ANGOP, the head of the mentioned Department, Fernando Sanito, said that the reduction of 3,000 tonnes was due to climatic factors, such as rain and strong cross sea that prevented vessels from entering the sea.
According to the official, artisanal fishing was the most affected, as it produced 2,000 tons in the first half of the year, while semi-industrial catches reached 6,000 tones.
The operational fleet has 527 boats, 510 of which are artisanal, 14 semi-industrial and three industrial, using encircling, dragging, knitting and threading.
Among the proposals for the Fisheries Development Fund to be developed by the end of the year is the creation of fish storage facilities to supply fish shops and the installation of warehouses in the municipalities of Porto Amboim and Sumbe.
The source informed that the Fisheries Development Fund has given 34 boats and 165 canoes for continental fishing, equipped with outboard motors and other fishing artefacts to artisanal fishermen's associations and cooperatives.
The official said that river or continental fishing has 87 boats, and in this category, there are difficulties in statistical control. IS/LC/IZ/MRA/DOJ
