Namacunde – At least 3.510 litres of fuel (petrol and diesel) were seized by the National Police on Sunday in the border area of Santa Clara, Namacunde municipality (Cunene), on suspicion of smuggling.
The information was provided to ANGOP by the director of Institutional Communication and Press of the Police in Cunene, Chief Superintendent Nicolau Tuvecalela, who said that 1,560 litres of petrol and 1,950 litres of diesel were to be sold in Namibia.
The quantities seized, packed in 25-litre drums and tanks adapted for 150 to 450-litre vehicles, were the result of patrol work that took place near the border perimeter between Angola and Namibia.
He explained that three vehicles, a motorbike, 35 cartons of cigarettes and 19 bundles of used clothes had also been seized for non-payment of customs requirements.
He said that three citizens aged 27, 36 and 51, suspected of the offence of counterfeiting coins, had been arrested in Ondjiva in possession of a metal safe containing 3,500 films.
Nicolau Tuvecalela also said that for use and abuse of credit cards and criminal association, three nationals aged 27, 30 and 31 were arrested, two of whom were traders and one a civil servant.
He clarified that the alleged criminals were caught in possession of 59 Banco de Fomento de Angola (BFA) multicaixa cards, supposedly issued to beneficiaries of the Kwenda programme.
The province of Cunene shares 460 kilometres of border with the Republic of Namibia, 340 of which are by land and 120 by river. PEM/LHE/OHA/DAN/DOJ
