Luanda – The National Oil, Gas and Biofuels Agency (ANPG) and the Exploration and Production Business Unit (UNEP) of Angola’s National Fuel Society (Sonangol) will start joint preparatory work for drilling and evaluation of Block KON11, in the Onshore Kwanza Basin which is inactive since 1996, according to an ANPG note that ANGOP had access to Wednesday in the Province of Luanda.
Located in the municipality of Cabo Ledo, the operation of Block KON11 is under the responsibility of the consortium made up of Sonangol Research and Production (30%), as operator, Brite's Oil & Gas (25%), Simples Oil Group (GSO) and Atlas Petroleum Exploration Worldwide (20% each), as well as Omega Risk Solutions Angola (5%).
At the moment, technical procedures are underway to guarantee the execution of the contract within the safety standards and respect for the environment required by the industry.
This concession was awarded within the framework of the 2020 Bidding, promoted by the National Concessionaire which is the ANPG.
"If the drilling yields positive results, the consortium will then proceed with the survey of geological and geophysical data (G&G), with the aim of improving the mapping of the block's structures, without jeopardizing the preliminary development aimed at restarting production", says the document.
For ANPG and Sonangol, the resumption of exploration activities in Block KON11 represents an important milestone for the Angolan oil industry, as it involves the effective reactivation of operations in an onshore block that has not been operated since the 1990s, namely in the adverse context of the current world economic situation.
National oil production remains at 1.1 million barrels per day (BOPD), and that is expected to remain so until the end of the year.
