Luanda - The Agogo Floating Production Storage and Offloading Unit (FPSO) was inaugurated on Tuesday in Shanghai, China, by the National Agency for Petroleum, Gas and Biofuels (ANPG), Azule Energy and the partners in Block 15/06, Sonangol Exploration and Production, Sinopec and NAMCOR.

According to the statement released by ANPG, the unit is part of the West Hub Agogo Integrated Development Project, which aims to develop the two main discoveries in Block 15/06, the Agogo and Ndungu fields, to significantly increase production in the block.

The initiative, the statement added, will stimulate the growth of the national economy, strengthen Angolan technical training and strengthen the local value chain, in line with the government's socio-economic development priorities.

"At a time when much is being said about the negative impact of carbon emissions on the environment, Agogo will be a 'green' FPSO, with an emissions target of up to 10 kg CO2/boe over its lifetime," the statement said.

It adds that the design includes a closed flare system (platform safety equipment used to burn off gas not used in the process), gas recovery units in the oil storage tanks and waste heat recovery, as well as a combined cycle gas turbine for power generation.

Angola's Secretary of State for Oil and Gas, José Barroso, emphasized that the Agogo Integrated Project reflects the African country's strategic vision for partnerships that prioritize technology transfer, local content development and environmental management.

"Critical components of this project were manufactured in Angolan shipyards, concrete proof of our commitment to strengthen local industry and promote self-sufficiency," the official said.

ANPG CEO Paulino Jerónimo, on his turn, said that local fabrication and construction activities at the SONAMET shipyard in Lobito, Angola, generated about 600,000 man-hours and more than 1,900 tons of fabrication.

The Agogo project will generate more than 1,600 direct jobs in Angola and more than five million man-hours during the EPCI phase between 2023 and 2025.

The ceremony was attended by members of the Angolan diplomatic corps accredited in China, ANPG Executive Administrator Ana Miala, Bloc 15/06 partners, Azule Energy shareholders and contractors.

According to the statement, the initiative highlights the multinational cooperation of all parties involved in supporting the development of the sector, following the guidelines of the Ministry of Mineral Resources, Oil and Gas for the development of the industry and the related energy transition.

"FPSO Agogo stands out for its integration of innovative low-carbon solutions, positioning Angola as a benchmark in sustainable energy projects," the statement said.

The FPSO is expected to be operational by the end of 2025, six months ahead of the FID.ML/ASS/TED/AMP
