Luanda - Angola participates, from the 12th to the 14th of this month, in the Global Leaders Forum, in Geneva, Switzerland, to be held as part of the 60th anniversary of UNCTAD - United Nations Trade and Development.
Angola will be represented by the Minister of Industry and Commerce, Rui Miguêns de Oliveira, at the event taking place under the theme “Charting a new course of development in a changing world”, according to a press release from the Permanent Mission of Angola to the Office of Nations Nations and Other International Organizations in Geneva.
The forum focuses its approach on the integrated approach to trade and development, and the interrelated issues of finance, technology, investment and sustainable development.
The Angolan government official will be one of four speakers in the debate on the topic “Preparing for tomorrow's economies - the urgency of options and actions”, on the second day of work, Thursday (13), to be moderated by the executive secretary of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, Claver Gatete.
The meeting also focuses on the themes “Making industrial policy work in favor of trade and development”, “Shaping a digital future for people and the planet”, “Preparing for tomorrow’s economies: The urgency of options and shares”.
“Reshaping foreign direct investment and global value chains for development” and “Globalization: Development and repositioning in the changing global context” are also topics to be addressed.
Quoted in the note, the UN Secretary-General for Trade and Development (UNCTAD), Rebeca Grynspan, considers that the 60th anniversary of this organization comes at a time of cascading crisis, with disruptions in global trade, growing debt and climate change.
These factors, she says, seriously affect developing countries, so it represents “an opportunity to reflect on the lessons learned over the last six decades and chart a new path forward, with a shared vision for the future”.
Rebeca Grynspan is accompanied by the UN Secretary-General, António Guterres, and the president of the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly, Dennis Francis.
The forum also features six Heads of State and Government and twenty eight Ministers of Trade and Foreign Affairs from different regions.
Representatives of civil society, renowned economists and international organizations also are part of it.
According to the event schedule, discussions will prioritize the needs of developing nations, with an emphasis on least developed countries, small island states and landlocked developing countries.
