Luanda - The Angolan Government is committed to financing the construction of electricity transmission lines to interconnect the national energy system to that of the southern African region, the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the National Rende Electricity Transport (RNT), Rui Gourgel said Tuesday in Luanda.
He added that RNT will become an operating member of the Southern African Energy Pool (SAPP) regional market, with the conclusion of the last phase of the construction project of the 400 KV lines that will connect Angola to neighbouring Namibia.
Rui Gourgel, who was speaking at the opening of a two-day meeting between heads of the legal offices of companies that are members of the Southern African Energy Pool (SAPP), made it known that Angola intends to supply energy, at high and very high voltage, generated from hydroelectric power stations for other countries in the region.
He assured that Angola has the hydroelectric dams of Capanda, with 530 MW, Cambambe, with 960 MW, and Laúca, with 2,067 MW, as well as the Soyo Combined Cycle Power Station, with 750 MW, which contribute to the improvement of electricity supply across the country.
Rui Gourgel highlighted that the current capacity responds to the country's need for industrialization and ensures the generation of considerable electricity flows for an effective participation in the SAPP market.
The manager of RNT stated that the working group for SAPP's legal issues will, among others, assess and update the various governing documents such as the constitution of the Coordination Centre, the Book of Rules and SAPP's market guidelines.
He pointed out, among the benefits of being a member of SAPP, the improvement of operational management, the result of sharing knowledge and practices of staff with those of companies in the region and participation in training actions.
The SAPP was created with the aim of ensuring that, in the southern region, countries with surplus electricity can sell to those countries with a deficit.
