Dundo - The Minister of Energy and Water, João Baptista Borges, said Friday in Lunda-Norte province, that Angola is focused on erasing carbon from its energy matrix, with heavy investment in the production of renewable energy with less economic impact.
According to João Borges, who was speaking at the inauguration ceremony of the Luachimo hydroelectric dam, with an installed capacity of 34 megawatts, the investments that the government has made in the sector are aimed at achieving the energy transition, in the fourth quarter of the 20-27 Development Plan and the Angola 20-50 strategy.
The minister emphasized that the introduction of 34 megawatts of renewable energy at the Luachimo dam, in addition to the solar park that was recently inaugurated in Saurimo, in Lunda-Sul, and the others that will soon be completed in Lucapa (Lunda-Norte) and Luena (Moxico), encourage the Executive to maintain its focus on the energy transition.
João Borges stressed that the Luachimo hydroelectric plant is not an isolated project, but is part of a series of other projects, one of which is the rehabilitation of the 86 kilometres of the distribution line that runs to Nzangi and the installation of 15 solar parks.
The minister said a total of 256 megawatts of electricity will be installed to benefit more than 350,000 people by 2027 and that the government aims to electrify more than 40 percent of the territory of Lunda-Norte and boost economic activity.
Targets
Angola aims to achieve an electrification rate of 50 percent as part of the 2023 - 2027 Energy Sector Action Plan, aligned with the 2050 Long-Term Agenda, which provides the continued diversification of the energy mix to incorporate at least 72 percent renewable energy.
Angola's electrification rate is currently 43 percent. HD/TED/AMP
