Luanda – The access to affordable housing worldwide is among the highlights of the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) Assembly, which is taking place 5 to 9 June, 2023, in Nairobi, capital of Kenya.
During five days, delegates from 193 United Nations (UN) member states, including Angola, are being encouraged to explore mechanisms to achieve the universal right to adequate housing and to move towards the elimination of existing barriers to affordable housing.
In the session, to happen under the theme “A sustainable urban future through inclusive and effective multilateralism: achieving the Sustainable Development Goals in times of global crises”, participants will also assess urban crisis recovery with the aim of encouraging member states to empower cities, respond to urban crises and support national recovery efforts, as well as the analysis of the UN-Habitat activities, including coordination matters and analysis of the progress made in the implementation of the New Urban Agenda and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, according to a note to which ANGOP has had access.
Urban climate action stands out among other issues to be addressed at the assembly, given the global commitment not to exceed the 1.5 degree Celsius limit on temperature increase by 2030.
Participants will also enjoy the World Urban Forum reports, as well as the UN-Habitat Strategic Plan for 2024-2027 term and it is expected to end with the release of a Ministerial Declaration and the approval of Draft Resolutions.
A delegation led by Angola's ambassador to the UN-Habitat, Sianga Abílio, is representing the country at the event.
The inaugural session of the UN-Habitat Assembly, on Monday, was witnessed by several personalities, with highlight to the UN Secretary-General, António Guterres, through videoconference, and the Kenyan President William Ruto.
On the occasion, the respective entities highlighted the importance of the United Nations member states to assume the commitment of implementing, until 2050, housing construction projects in resilient and sustainable urban areas, a challenge that, according to the President of the Republic of Kenya, requires multilateral action.
The Assembly is the governing body of UN-Habitat and meets every four years. The Executive Council, of which Angola is a member, is responsible for annually defining action plans, programs, and their respective budgets, as well as monitoring their execution. QCB/AC/MRA/jmc
