Inflation goes up 0.44 pct in August

Luanda - Inflation in Angola, measured by the National Consumer Price Index (IPCN) registered a year-on-year variation of 2.07% in August, representing 0.44 percent more than in July, the Rapid Information Sheet (FIR) published by the National Statistics Institute (INE) has said.

It adds that with an upward trend of inflation, education was the one that recorded the biggest increase in prices, with a variation of 6.19 percent.

Compared to the same period last year (August 2022 to August 2023), the IPCN registered an acceleration in the current variation of 1.28 percentage points.

After education, health (2.37 per cent), food and non-alcoholic drinks (2.19 per cent) and miscellaneous goods and services (2.12 per cent) also contributed to the price increase.

Of the 18 provinces, only three recorded lower price variations, namely Benguela (1.16 per cent), Cuando Cubango (1.18 per cent) and Moxico (1.19 per cent).

The provinces of Luanda (2.82%), Lunda Sul (2.06%) and Namibe (1.67%) had the highest variations.

The year-on-year change stands at 13.54%, a decrease of 6.24 percentage points compared to the same period recorded last year (August 2022), while the accumulated change stood at 9.91%.

Comparing the current year-on-year change with the previous month, there was an acceleration of 1.42 percentage points (pp).

The "food and non-alcoholic beverages" section  contributed the most to the increase in the general price level with 1.28 pp in August, followed by miscellaneous goods and services (0.15 pp), education (0.14 pp) and transport (0.10 pp).

 The other classes contributed less than 0.10 percentage points.

In Luanda it was 2.82 per cent

Inflation in the province of Luanda, with more than eight million inhabitants, recorded a variation of 2.82% from July to August 2023.

Comparing the monthly variations (July to August 2023), there was an acceleration of 0.64 percentage points.

In year-on-year terms (August 2022 to August 2023), there was an acceleration in the current variation of 2.12 percentage points.

Education recorded the highest price increase at 5.90 per cent.

Also noteworthy were price rises in transport (3.62%), health (3.27%) and clothing and footwear (3.15%).
