Luanda – Angola men's chess team defeated Barbados (3-1) on Monday, while the women's team overcame Hong Kong (3.5-0.5) in the 10th round of the Chess Olympiad that ends Tuesday in Chennai, India.
The Angolan men's team that occupied the 123rd position in the penultimate round rose to 103rd position with 19.5 points.
The Angolan team reached two wins and the same number of draws.
Vanderson Dias beat Emar Edwards, and Amaro Lutuima overcame Adam Roachford. Fide Masters (MF) Sérgio Miguel tied with Justin Blackman, and Domingos Júnior tied with Justin Parsons.
Angola face Zambia on Tuesday in the last round.
In the women’s category, International Master (IM) Esperança Caxita beat Candidate Master (CM) Crystal Deng, Jemima Paulo (MF) beat Ka Yan Lam and Renelsa António dominated Ting Hoi Leung.
The Angola women’s team are in the 64th position with 22 points, the group face Finland in the last round.
Uzbekistan lead the competition with 30.5 points, in men, while the women’s category is led by India with 28 pts.
The 2021 edition was played via online because of the Covid-19 pandemic. Angolan were eliminated in the third phase of Group C.
